Souper Bowl of Caring

It’s likely that you didn’t give much thought to what you were going to eat today, beyond simply opening your cupboard and choosing something.  It’s also likely that you’ll decide when and where to eat tomorrow,  but do you know what you would do if suddenly, you didn’t know where your next meal would come from, what it would be, or when?

That’s where our nation’s Food Banks and pantries step in, helping to feed millions each day. Donations are their lifeblood. At the holidays, the need for food goes up for a lot of reasons:  seasonal work ends, children on holiday break are not getting breakfast and lunch at school through assistance programs, or simply because the holidays bring families together – and while it’s a great cause for celebration, sometimes more mouths to feed can stretch food budgets beyond what a family can handle.

As a result, food bank shelves can clear pretty quickly – and that’s where food drives like Souper Bowl of Caring comes in.

Albertsons Market stores in the South have worked with Souper Bowl of Caring for several years, hosting a bagged food drive where customers can purchase a bag of food for $8.00 or they can also make a $1.00 toward the cause. Over the past five years, over 1 Million pounds of food have been donated to food banks throughout Texas, Louisiana and Florida, all because of Souper Bowl of Caring.

Souper Bowl of Caring does more than just put food on the shelves of pantries and food banks that have been depleted by the holiday rush, it also provides much-needed hope to families in need.  In 2011, nearly 18 million households were considered to be “food insecure,” which means they didn’t know where their next meal was going to come from, and another 6.8 million households had very low food security.

The hunger statistics in our country are not only staggering, they’re escalating – and in need of our attention and efforts. Souper Bowl of Caring mobilizes our associates and customers unlike any other hunger relief program we have.  We’re proud to tackle hunger with them.
