Food, fun and friends make up the July 4th get-together.  This is one time of year casual entertaining is at its height with barbecues and pool parties.  Let’s make this celebration easy on the host to be able to enjoy the day without summer stress.  Bring out the themed paper goods to keep your party festive and for an easy clean up.  When planning your menu, make sure its crowd-friendly and select recipes you can make ahead of time.  From burgers to shish kebob, have them premade in the refrigerator to pop on the grill when desired.  This is the perfect time to take advantage of bountiful seasonal fruits and vegetables for the best prices and quality.  The party wouldn’t be complete without juicy cool watermelon; get creative and use watermelon as an ingredient in a salsa or salad.  To satisfy your sweet tooth, a pan of chocolate brownies makes a ton and is the perfect pick up.  Serve with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries to have the festive finish.

July 4th Trim & Terrific Tips

  • Select leaner cuts of meat ending in “loin” or “round”
  • Sub nutritious sweet potatoes for potatoes to create a healthier potato salad
  • Add 1/2 cup salsa to burger patties as 1/2 cup salsa = 1 cup vegetables
  • Try Greek non-fat plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise in dips
  • Create your own marinade to control sodium instead of buying pre-marinated meats
  • Make sure to rinse and drain canned beans to reduce sodium
