Joe Stories

This year, we celebrate our 75th year!  To celebrate and commemorate this momentous anniversary, we have collected “Joe Stories;” stories of people fondly remembering our namesake and founder, Joe Albertson.  So far, there have been great submissions!  Here are a few for you to enjoy! And don’t forget to submit yours to http://albertsonscelebrates75.com for your chance to win a $75 Gift Card!

From Rich Contreras (Ontario, OR), Former Albertsons Employee

“Many years ago, I was the closing key person in Ontario Albertsons.  Saturday at the West Park Plaza was always busy.  Joe Albertson would come into our store around 6:30 at night.  This gentleman was pushing a cart in the produce isle, going through the produce and pulling overripe product.  I asked him if he needed help, he replied, ‘Young man, just doing my job.  My name is Joe Albertson, nice to meet you.’  Joe was always polite and very talkative.  He impressed me as having the highest standards in his store even when he was the President of Albertsons.”

“When I was just 18 years old, I worked at Skaggs Drug Store which was right next to Albertsons in our mall.  Joe came to our candy counter and bought a pound of cinnamon bears and told me that I had a nice smile and to have a great day.  I knew it was Joe because I saw his picture in Albertsons.  He was always smiling and offering everyone cinnamon bears!  I thought to myself, ‘Now there’s a heck of a nice guy.’”

“I have enjoyed going to Albertsons stores  my whole life. When I was a little girl my father and I always went to the Albertsons on 17th and state. We would walk there, buy our groceries and get goodies from the bakery. I even got to see Joe Albertson in there once. My dad explained who he was and I was so in awe that somebody could make all those stores. My family has always used Albertsons to shop.  We have always enjoyed the high quality of products that they make and sell there. My husband and I were even married and Kathryn Albertson park. I think that Idaho would be a much different place if it hadn’t been for Joe and Kathryn Albertson and their generosity and their love of their community. Thank you”
