We’ve all got one—that short list of family meals that we prepare again and again. But there’s a simple and delicious way to jazz up our well-worn repertoires: Substitute seafood in the dishes we already depend on.
• Making chicken noodle soup? Save the chopped chicken and add shrimp in its place. (Shrimp is wonderful in chicken broth!)
• When making chicken-corn chowder, omit the chicken and add scallops instead.
• Skip potato soup’s traditional ham or bacon flavoring. Instead, add smoked salmon.
• Omit beef or pork from your favorite chili recipe, but toss in chopped shrimp, scallops and cubed haddock or cod for the last 10 minutes of cooking.
• Toss out the turkey in turkey tetrazzini and add salmon instead.
• Turn old-school scalloped potatoes and ham into new-school scalloped potatoes and salmon.
• Exchange chicken for shrimp in any chicken-noodle casserole.
• Chicken Alfredo becomes shrimp, scallop or salmon Alfredo in a snap.
• Layer lasagna with veggies and shrimp or scallops instead of sausage and beef.
• When making spaghetti and meatballs, put shrimp or salmon in the meatballs’ place.
• Turn tacos into a seafood adventure by omitting the expected meats and using shrimp, tilapia or cod instead.
• Forgo pizza’s typical spicy meat toppings, opting instead for salmon or shrimp.
• Alternate your beef, chicken and pork stir-fries with ones made with shrimp or scallops.
