Experts say inviting your kids to help out in the kitchen is beneficial to you and them! It has been shown that cooking with kids encourages them to try healthy foods that could lead to healthier eating choices in their adult years, all while teaching them skills that will last a lifetime! Cooking with kids also gives parents the opportunity to spend quality time and create memories with their children while keeping the kids away from the TV and junk food. It’s a win-win all the way around!

Some parents probably think their kids are too young to really be helping out in the kitchen, but that’s not the case! If your kids are 5 years and under, they can wash, scrub, tear, break, snap, peel, roll, and mash certain foods, as well as shake, spread and use a cookie or biscuit cutter. They can even measure and pour ingredients and mix with a spoon. When it comes to kids that are a little older, between the ages of 8-10, they can do things such as read/invent recipes, cut fruits and veggies with a plastic knife, use electric mixers (with supervision) and even crack eggs and grate cheese. It’s important to structure the work area so they are less likely to spill or hurt themselves! Have them do their measuring, kneading or rolling with a jellyroll pan underneath to catch any spills or drips.

They watch the pretzel bites rise to the top when they are briefly boiled in a baking soda bath, and after baking for 12 minutes, they can top their pretzel bites with a sweet or savory topping.
