Recipes for Resolutions

The New Year is coming and you have decided to resolve to eat healthier, however, you are panicked by the thought of giving up all your favorite foods. You don’t have to change what you eat, just how you prepare it. There will be no broken resolutions with these healthy, oh-so-easy food substitutions – you won’t feel like you are sacrificing anything as all of your trimmed up favorites are just as delicious! You can have it all – from the ultimate comfort food of stuffed potatoes and lasagna to burgers and chocolate chip cookies, these recipes are trimmed down, yet kept terrific – have your cake (or cookies) and eat it too!

  • Choose low-sodium broth-based soups instead of high fat cream based soups
  • Replace sour cream for Greek yogurt to reduce fat and increase protein intake
  • Cook with low fat dairy (i.e. cheese, milk, cream cheese)
  • Select cuts of meat “loin or round” for leaner choices
  • Prepare food in low fat cooking methods: Grill, Broil, Bake, Sear, Sauté
  • Substitute whole grain pasta and brown rice for extra fiber and nutrients
  • Fat-free and low in sodium, Louisiana yams (sweet potatoes) are a nutritional bargain high in antioxidants and fiber.  Substitute sweet potatoes for potatoes in any recipe.
  • You can easily throw in extra vegetables, like corn, tomatoes, and spinach to your favorite casserole, soup or stir-fry
  • Dress sandwiches with nutrient-rich avocado and hummus instead of mayo, full of empty calories

Here are some great recipes for your resolutions!

Stuffed Potatoes

Rich, creamy stuffed potatoes with bacon and cheese become figure friendly with a few minor substitutions.  Center cut bacon is leaner or you may use turkey bacon.  Scooping out the potatoes is easy so give it a try.

Simple Salmon Burgers

No need to give up burgers but be creative with an omega-3 rich salmon burger.  Toss all the ingredients into a food processor, form into patties and you are done.  You’ll love my secret ingredient.
