INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

  • In large bowl, combine sugar, salt, yeast and 1 cup flour. In a 1-quart saucepan over low heat, heat butter and milk until very warm (120° to 130°F. Do not exceed 140⁰F).
  • With mixer on low speed, gradually beat liquid into dry ingredients until just mixed. Increase speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes, occasionally scraping bowl. Beat in 1 cup flour or enough to make a thick batter; continue beating for 2 minutes, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, fold in enough additional flour (about 2 cups) to make a soft dough.
  • Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and very elastic, about 10 minutes, adding more flour while kneading, if necessary. Shape dough into ball; cover with bowl and let dough rest 15 minutes for easier shaping.
  • While the dough is resting, set aside 1 egg white in a small dish/bowl. In another larger bowl, thoroughly combine remaining whole egg and yolk with cheese; set aside. Grease 9-inch round cake pan.
  • Once dough has rested, on a lightly floured surface, with lightly floured rolling pin, roll dough into a 24" by 6" rectangle.
  • Lengthwise along center of dough, shape cheese mixture into cylinder shape. Fold dough over filling, making about 1- to 1-1/2-inch overlap; pinch seams to seal.
  • Place roll, seam side down, in pan to make a ring, overlapping ends slightly; pinch ends together to seal. Cover with towel; let rest in warm place for 10 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush loaf with reserved egg white. Garnish top with almonds. Bake 1 hour or until golden and bread sounds hollow when lightly tapped. Remove bread from pan immediately; let stand 15 minutes for easier cutting. Cut bread into wedges.
