  • Lightly spray or wipe a large baking dish with vegetable oil. Pour the syrup into the dish. Slice the French bread into eight 2-inch-thick slices and place them over the syrup.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, egg whites, milk, vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and beat until well mixed. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, pressing the bread down gently so it soaks up the batter. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°. Remove the pan from the refrigerator and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg over the bread; bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve with fresh fruit, if desired.
