DIRECTIONS

  • The apples.
  • Quarter, core, peel, and slice the apples; toss in a large mixing bowl with the lemon juice and the sugar-cinnamon mixture.
  • The streusel crisp.
  • Process the flour, sugar, salt, and butter in the machine with several on-off pulses, only until the mixture looks like coarse meal. Add the oat flakes and pulse in with 2 or 3 flicks, to break them up roughly.
  • Assembling.
  • Spread half the streusel in the bottom of the buttered baking dish, turn in the sliced apples and their accumulated juices, and cover with the remaining streusel.
  • Baking - about 1 hour at 350°F.
  • Bake, covered, in the middle level of the preheated oven until the apples are slowly bubbling - about 20 minutes. Uncover and continue baking, until a knife point goes into them very easily. The streusel topping will have browned lightly.
  • Serving.
  • Serve warm or cold just as it is, or with ice cream, sour cream, whipped cream, or custard sauce.
