DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly coat a 2-1/2-quart ovenproof casserole dish with vegetable oil and set aside.
  • In a large pot, steam the green beans over simmering water until just tender about 5 minute). Drain well and set aside.
  • While the beans are steaming, prepare the cheese sauce. In a medium-sized pot, heat the oil over low heat. Add the shallots and sauté, stirring, until they are soft about 5 minutes. Sprinkle with the flour and combine well. Whisk the milk slowly into the shallots, then add the dill, salt, pepper, and garlic. Bring the sauce to a boil, stirring, and cook 1 minute. Remove from the heat and add the cheese.
  • Place one-third of the beans on the bottom of the casserole dish and sprinkle with one-fourth of the bread crumbs. Top with one-third of the nuts and one-third of the cheese sauce. Repeat the layering twice, ending with the sauce. Sprinkle the top with more bread crumbs.
  • Place in the oven and bake until the casserole is hot and bubbly and the top is golden brown about 30 minutes. Serve immediately.
