DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F.
  • In a mixer bowl, beat the butter and 2/3 cup confectioners sugar until light. Add the anise extract and the lemon and orange peel. Sift together the all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, and cornstarch and add to the butter mixture. Mix at low speed until almost combined. Add the anise seeds and nuts and mix until combined.
  • Shape into balls the diameter of a nickel and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until the bottoms are lightly browned, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Roll the cookies in the sifted confectioners sugar and let them finish cooling completely on a rack. Roll again in confectioners' sugar and store in an airtight container several days, or up to 3 months in the freezer. Roll again in confectioners' sugar before serving.
