Preheat oven to 300°F.

Set egg whites in small mixing bowl and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Line large cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Measure the vanilla and cream of tartar and add them to the egg whites. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form (tips curl).

Measure the sugar and gradually add the sugar to the egg whites, 1 tbsp at a time, beating on high speed until stiff peaks form (tips stand straight), and sugar is almost dissolved.

Spoon meringue into decorating bag fitted with a large star tip (1/2-inch opening) or drop by spoon onto the cookie sheet.

Press a gumdrop or Life Savers into the center of each star or place rainbow sprinkles over the top.

Bake for about 15 minutes or until cookies just start to turn brown. Turn off oven and let cookies dry in oven (keep door closed) for 15 minutes. Remove cookies and cool on wire rack.
