Candied Apples

DIRECTIONS
Remove stems from apples and insert wooden skewers in their place. (If the stems are sturdy, the apples may be candied without skewers.)
Cook sugar and water until brittle when tried in cold water, or until a candy thermometer registers 265 degrees. Remove from heat. Stir in a few drops of red food coloring, if desired.
Dip each apple into the sugar syrup, coating well. Cool on a buttered cooking sheet until coating is set.
