  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking pan with shortening.
  • Place the butter and the chocolate chips in a glass mixing bowl and microwave them on high for 1-minute intervals until the mixture is melted. Stir until smooth.
  • Stir in the sugar and the vanilla extract until well mixed.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  • Add the flour mixture to the melted chocolate and stir to combine.
  • Add the eggs and stir until well incorporated.
  • Stir in 1/2 cup of the pecans and blend well. Scrape the mixture into the prepared pan.
  • Sprinkle the top with the remaining 1/2 cup of pecans. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until set. Be careful not to overcook.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a wire cooling rack to cool before cutting. Cut the brownies into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature.
