CALL THE KIDS
Have your child peel the wrappers off each caramel and place the caramels in a 2- or 4-cup glass measure (or microwave-safe bowl of similar shape). Even a two-year-old can help you take the wrappers off. Add the 2 tablespoons of water to the measuring cup with the caramels and microwave on HIGH about 3 minutes or until smooth, stirring after each minute. Let the caramel sauce stand a few minutes to cool slightly.
With your assistance, a four-year-old or older child can probably dip the apples in the caramel while holding onto the stick (tell your child to turn the apple to coat all sides with the caramel). Your child can help spread and even out the caramel once he or she pulls the apple out of the caramel sauce using a wooden stick as a knife. He or she can also scrape any excess sauce from the bottom of the apple using the wooden stick. Place the caramel apples on greased wax paper.
Store in the refrigerator for up to two days. Before serving let stand at room temperature 15 minutes to soften the caramel a little. You may need to cut the caramel apples into wedges, removing the core, so younger children can eat them easily.
