DIRECTIONS
PARENT PREP
Mix the contents of the hot roll mix box and the yeast packet in a large bowl. Stir in the 1 cup hot water, margarine, and egg substitute. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and with greased or floured hands, shape the dough into a ball. Knead the dough until smooth, about 5 minutes, sprinkling additional flour over the surface to reduce stickiness. Cover the dough and let it rest 5 minutes. Shape each 1/4 cup of dough into a ball. You should have exactly 12 balls.
CALL THE KIDS
Give each child three balls. Help the children roll and pull each ball into a rope about 10 inches long. Have the children line the three ropes side by side. Connect the three ropes by squeezing the tops of the ropes together. Help each child make a braid, tightly weaving the 3 ropes. Make a wreath by circling the braid and pressing the two ends together.
The children can decorate their wreaths with green and red glacé cherries or dried fruit pieces. Cover the wreaths and let rise in a warm place (80 to 85°F) until doubled in size (about 30 minutes). The children will be so surprised to see how the wreaths have grown after 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
You and the children can decorate the wreaths further by tying gift tags around each wreath, making a bow at the bottom of the wreath with Christmas ribbon, or with a confectioners powdered sugar glaze (flavored with lemon juice or vanilla).
