Apple and Cornmeal Pudding

DIRECTIONS
Butter a 2-quart shallow, ovenproof baking dish.
In a large saucepan, combine 2 cups of the milk and the butter and bring just to a boil. In a small bowl, stir together the remaining milk and the cornmeal. Add the cornmeal mixture to the scalded milk and cook over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. (Do not burn.)
Preheat oven to 300° F. In a small bowl, mix together egg, molasses, and spices and add to the thickened cornmeal mixture, whisking thoroughly. Pour the mixture into the prepared dish and bake for 1 hour.
In another small bowl, combine the apples and raisins. Remove the pudding from the oven. Stir the apple mixture into the pudding and bake for 1 hour more, or until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool slightly. Serve warm.
