Oh Pears!

Capture the sweet taste of winter with pear treats

Sweet and juicy, pears have a lovely buttery texture and delicate aroma. Fresh or canned, they’re an easy addition to so many recipes. If picked unripe, pears will ripen off the tree. To speed ripening, place them in a brown paper bag, then refrigerate for up to one week. Anjou, Bartlett and Bosc are all-purpose pears, good for eating fresh or for baking.

During the holidays, cooking with pears is a great way to add sweetness to salads, appetizers, entrees and, of course, dessert. If using raw pears, toss fresh pear slices in a bowl with lemon juice to keep them from browning.
