Stamping Out Hunger in Las Vegas
May 9th, 2013
Hunger is an increasingly serious issue in the United States. With 1 in 6 families living in a food-deprived household and an economy that is still in recovery, it isn’t hard to come to the conclusion that our local Food Banks are struggling. Most donations to Food Banks are made during the Holidays starting with Thanksgiving and by February, the constant call for help is almost too much for the Food Banks to handle; they struggle to supply the everyday items most of us take for granted.
For 21 years, the Postal Letter Carriers of Las Vegas have coordinated an annual Food Drive, “Stamp Out Hunger,” on the second Saturday in May. The program is ingenious. If you have any non-perishable food items (canned foods, pasta, baby food, bottled water) that you would like to donate to your local food bank, all you need to do is place them in a bag and leave it next to your mailbox where the Carrier will gladly pick up your donation!
Our Albertsons stores in Las Vegas have proudly supported this program and have worked with Stamp Out Hunger to help drive donations by offering a $9.99 pre-packed donation bag containing non-perishable foods that can be purchased by customers and left at the store. Albertsons also acts as a drop-off location for anyone that would like to make their own donation.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive started yesterday, May 11th and Albertsons customers can purchase donation bags or leave their personal donations at any Las Vegas area store between now and May 12th. The goal of this program is to stock the shelves for the long summer months. With Albertsons help, the Food Banks were able to keep shelves stocked and food available for the hungry through last February.
