Like thousands of other Albertsons customers throughout Southern California and the West, Upland resident and customer Melissa E. was busy shopping and playing the Monopoly Shop, Play and Win game during its three month run. But while there were scores of individual cash, Apple iPad airs, backyard make-overs, Xbox, gift card and free grocery winners, not including Melissa, the $1 million grand prize went unclaimed.
With the game officially over, it was time to conduct the online ‘Second Chance’ sweepstakes. So along with 48 million other Monopoly players, including customers from Albertsons family of stores at Jewel-Osco in Chicago, ; Acme Markets on the east coast and New England’s Shaw’s and Star Markets. No doubt, all who played were looking to get their hands on the ‘Second Chance” dollars. Melissa too submitted her entry. In fact, she and her kids sat around their kitchen table daydreaming of their fortune as the entry form was completed.
On June 20, Melissa, received a personal phone call from Albertsons Southern California Division President Wayne Denningham informing her of the family’s big win. For a brief moment there was silence. The recently laid-off mother of five teenagers fumbled for her words.
“ ‘Is this for real?’ is what was really going through her head. Then she jokingly replied, ‘Are you kidding me?’ ”
Melissa recounted her initial thoughts ten days later when she, her husband, Mark, and their family joined the Albertsons Upland store team and division leadership for a big celebration. Indeed, it was a festive mood in the 19th and Campus store’s Produce Department complete with confetti, balloons, cake, a giant sized $500,000 check and plenty of smiles and laughter to go around!
With money in hand, Melissa and Mark will first be meeting with an accountant to figure out their next steps but the ultimate plan is to set aside some of the money toward college tuition for their teens. Everyone agrees their future looks bright!
