A Thousand Loaves of Caring in Baton Rouge

Every year, hundreds of thousands of customers walk through the doors of an Albertsons Market. We’re part of the daily lives of so many families like yours, and we’re really proud that you trust us for your day-to-day needs. But there are times when we ask for help from you, too. We know that there is so much strength to be found in working together to help others, and to make our community a better place to be.

A key cause for our stores is hunger relief, so in many communities we’ve got strong relationships with food banks, pantries, churches and other organizations who work to feed the hungry. While it seems like a food bank is the most natural partner for a grocery store, it’s also a deliberate choice. In 2011 (that’s just last year), nearly 18 million households (that’s families – not people) were “food insecure,” which means they didn’t know where their next meal was going to come from, and another 6.8 million households had very low food security. The hunger statistics in our country are staggering, escalating, and in need of our attention and time.

And that’s where our Baton Rouge customers at Airline and Old Hammond stepped in to show us how strong the community there is. The idea was pretty simple: have a weekend campaign to raise 1,000 loaves of French bread for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

Store director Richard Nash called the campaign “A Thousand Loaves of Caring,” and asked Baton Rouge customers who were purchasing a loaf of French bread to pitch in for a second loaf of bread that would be donated to the Food Bank. He also asked Coca Cola and Blue Bell ice cream if they wanted to help out with the program, and they gladly obliged, serving up $1 Root Beer floats with all of the money collected going to the Food Bank, too.

When the final loaf was tallied, we all got to see how strong the Baton Rouge community is when it comes to giving back. They not only doubled the goal, but nearly tripled it. In the end, 2,850 loaves of bread were donated to families who get their food through the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

And that means a great deal to us in not only Baton Rouge but everywhere we have stores. Thank you to Richard Nash and the team at store 2712 as well as Coca Cola and Blue Bell ice cream for helping us make a difference in Baton Rouge this year.
