Celebrate National Donut Day Today!

Jun 6th, 2014

People are as different as the donuts they love. Whether your favorite is a maple bar, jelly-filled, Boston Kreme, powdered, glazed, old fashioned, chocolate frosted or our brand new croinut (croissant-doughnut hybrid), there’s a donut variety for you, so stop by Albertsons today and treat yourself! Not that we needed a holiday as an excuse to eat a donut!

National Donut Day has been celebrated on the first Friday of June since 1938, when The Salvation Army started a fundraiser to honor the women, then called “lassies”, who served donuts to men serving in World War I. Donuts brought the men a little piece of home to offer comfort in a time of war. Check out this video for more history on National Donut Day –

Donuts come in all shapes and sizes these days, but do you know why the traditional donut has a hole in the center of it? One legend claims that back in the day when egg yolks were added to the dough recipe, bakers found that the center of the donut wasn’t cooking as quickly as the exterior. The solution was to eliminate the source of the problem – and the donut we know and love today was born. Another legend is that a Dutch sailor’s mother made him donuts for a sea voyage. When a storm hit, the sailor had trouble steering the ship and eating a donut at the same time, so he speared the donut onto one of the spokes of the wheel. The sailor was quite satisfied with what he had done so from that point forward he ordered all his donuts to be cooked with a hole in the center. Whether true or not, it is quite the tale!

If you can’t get enough of the donut, you don’t have to wait long until the next donut holiday:

  • June 8: International Jelly-Filled Donut Day
  • September 14: National Cream-Filled Donut Day
  • October 30: Buy a Donut Day
