Erletxe, Snake River Valley
Erle is bee and etxe is house. Put those two together for the bee hive, or where the bees live: Erletxe. Pronounced air and the leche (just like milk in spanish). In the summer of 2011 Mary and I traveled to La Rioja wineries of northern Spain to study the traditional growing methods of the Tempranillo wine grapes. We stayed at a little B&B in the walled city of La Guardia. We were met at the B&B by Maria, the host. At the entrance door was this sign Erletxe and we asked what this sign meant. She said bee house. As it turns out Maria was a honeybee keeper and we became instant friends. During the week Maria took us to the mountains and showed us ancient roads made by the Romans, the ancient Dolmens ceremonial structures, and her lovely honeybee hives. She showed us her fascinating world in the Basque Wine Country. Thank you Maria. - Ron & Mary Bitner. Alcohol 14% by volume. 28 Produced & Bottled by Bitner Vineyards Caldwell, Idaho 83607.
