Southern California Albertsons Stores Team Up with Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to Help Raise Awareness, Find a Cure

Donation Campaign Supports Local Community and Charitable Efforts

FULLERTON, CA (Aug.  15, 2013) –Albertsons is asking customers to take steps to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis with an in-store fundraising effort now underway.  The 193 Albertsons Southern California division stores are offering customers the chance to contribute to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by selecting $1, $3 or $5 donation coupons as they check out with their groceries.

“Once you fully understand the struggle that youngsters with CF face daily, there’s no doubt that we should be involved in raising money to help find a cure,” emphasized Wendy Oliver, vice president of operations for Albertsons Southern California Division. “The good news is that the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is getting closer and we want to see these kids grow up to be healthy adults.”

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. The average lifespan of someone with cystic fibrosis is 37 years.

“Albertsons’ longstanding tradition of serving communities goes beyond food and we are honored to be the recipient of this generous effort. With their help and the help of all of our corporate partners, one we day we will say that CF stands for Cure Found,” said Michael Shumard, executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Southern California Chapter.

Shumard added that recently the FDA approved a drug called Kalydeco that has shown positive results for improving the health of those with Cystic Fibrosis.  Kalydeco is currently being used to help thousands of CF patients around the world.

Albertsons’ Southern California division is a major sponsor of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Hike the Halo event, where participants climb the numerous stairs of Angel stadium in Anaheim. Hike the Halo takes place on Nov. 10 and features both competitive and non-competitive opportunities. Lilia, I work at 6191. Just checking to see if store employees are able to sign up to this event at store level. Last year we were encouraged to participate. This year this event has yet to be mentioned at store level. Please get back to me. I would like to know if there is a fee to be part of this worthy event.
    Best Regards, Guyla
